Almost all Linux Distributions have support for ಕನ್ನಡ.So browsing ಕನ್ನಡ Unicode websites will not be much of a problem But if u have any doubts about the kannada fonts being displayed on your system then visit ಮುಖ್ಯಪುಟ of the kannada wiki page ..If the page is displayed properly then u can rest assure that kannada fonts will be properly displayed on your system ..
This tutorial is about the input methods for ಕನ್ನಡ on GNU/Linux system …Here i will show how to install Smart Common Input Method (SCIM) platform so writing in kannada on ubuntu 10.10 will be a easy ..
We need to install the following packages :
You can install by Opening Synaptic Package Manager (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager) searching for the following items, marking them and then apply.
or the easy alternative is
$ sudo apt-get install scim scim-m17 scim-gtk2-immodule ttf-kannada-fonts $ scim-setup &
All the necessary packages have been installed ..
Now we need to assign a trigger for switching keyboard layouts so open SCIM Input Method Setup (System>Preferences>SCIM Input Method Setup>FrontEnd>Global Setup)
I have assigned the trigger a Cntrl+Alt+Space
and make sure kannada is selected in the IMEngine page
Create file by the name ’75scim’ under
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/ with following lines (if there is a file by the name 90im-switch its better to remove it for this setup)
export XMODIFIERS="@im=SCIM" export XIM_PROGRAM="/usr/bin/scim -d" export GTK_IM_MODULE=scim export QT_IM_MODULE=scim
for the changes to take effect log out and login
Now u can see a scim toolbar on the screen …Using the trigger we can toggle between different keyboards …
With Kannada-Kn-itrans font (I use this font u can use any one of the three) open gedit and start typing in ನಮ್ಮ ಕನ್ನಡ just like the way am 🙂 🙂
If u are using any other distribution of GNU/Linux or Windows then this might help
Thank you Guys 🙂
ಸಿರಿಗನ್ನಡಂ ಗೆಲ್ಗೆ 🙂 🙂
